Granny Squares!

I've been inspired by the blog Meet Me at Mikes to create some granny squares with some left over yarn. It's been pretty fun. I've been stuck on another project for a while, and a granny square is a nice and simple little project to get your mind off of things and use up extra yarn. Good times. :)

Flowers, oh my!

More photos from Eli and I's trip to Woodland, Washington. Is that sentence grammatically correct? I'm looking at you, Gloria Harrison.

Sometimes I have this problem when taking pictures. I have two that are similar, and I can't decide which one I like better, or which one is a better photo. Below is an example of this problem. I love both of these, but the subject (my cute little niece) is making two very different faces, and each one invokes a different feeling. But which is a better photo? I can't decide. Which one do you like better?

Lentil Soup

Sometimes when I go to the grocery store I don't have anything in particular in mind, but I am hungry. Often, especially on payday, this is bad idea, because I can end up buying a bunch of random stuff that looks delicious in the grocery store and then get home and realize I don't really have anything to make a real meal, but a bunch of snacks and appetizer type items, i.e. chips and salsa, etc.

Other times, I go to the grocery store and I just kind of walk around and look for inspiration. Sometimes when I go to Fred Meyer I'll peruse through a cooking magazine for an idea. Other times, like when I go to Food Front, I'll just find something delicious and make a meal out of it, like some handmade pasta, a can of olives, and artichoke pesto. And yet other times still, like today when I went to Albertsons (as you can see I enjoy a plethora of grocery stores), I'll look for something with a recipe on the back and then roll with that.

Today I was in the mood for a hearty soup, as I often am, and I settled on some lentils. The recipe on the back was pretty standard; celery, onion, garlic, carrot, bay leaf, ham, lentils, water. I, as I'm often wont to do, I adjusted the proportions to my own tastes, I added twice as much water/broth to make it more brothy, and doubled the amount of veggies as well, just because I love veggies. All in all, I spent under $9 and I have enough food for dinner tonight and leftovers for a few days. I really lucked out when I found a smoked pork shank on sale for $2.81. I don't really care for the meat, but it adds great flavor to the soup. And yay for thrifty shopping!

P.S. My camera is still at the shop, so you'll have to suffer through the pics from Eli's baby-camera. My XTi should be back in my hot little hands either tomorrow or Monday, depending on how long it takes for shipping. I can't wait to get her back!

Shows and such

I have really fallen behind on some of my shows lately. LOST, House, 24, I even missed last weeks episode of Dollhouse (although I'm sure I'll be watching soon). One show I've managed to watch pretty regularly lately is Castle, starring Nathan Fillion. It's kind of your typical procedural with the buddy Male/Female duo, a la Mulder and Scully, Bones and Booth. The one strong thing it has going for it is of course Nathan Fillion, who is funny and charming as usual.

In rerun news, I've been watching a ton of original series Battlestar Galactica, which rules. It's like someone watched Star Wars a bunch, loved it, and decided to make their own tv show. It is hard to compare it to the Battlestar Galactica of the 2000s, because it's got a totally different vibe.

I've also finally been watching some Rescue Me season 4. Good so far, I've only watched the first four episodes, but dang. Didn't see that coming (don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet, although it's been out for a while).

Good times. Hopefully this weekend I'll get caught up on LOST. I have like 5 episodes clogging up the DVR at the boyfriends place. LOST marathon. Boo yeah.
